This is partly due to the feedback from the golf ball as well as the contact from the putter. The fact is the golf ball is the only equipment that you used for every shot on your round of golf whereas you change to different type of clubs for different type of golf shots. It used to be that about a decade ago most balls fall into 2 categories. First are the ones used by the golfing professionals which have exceptional soft feel and high spin from the wound balata golf balls. These balls with high scoring spins provide these professionals with the ability to work the ball around the greens. However these balls lack driving distances and are poor in durability but these factors are not enough to affect the tour professionals as they can take the durability and the distance sacrifices for improved scoring spins.

They offer fantastic feel and have great spin though stopping faster on the green - but the trade-off is a lack in distance. Also their performance is affected by the temperature with their distance and overall performance deteriorating in temperatures below 20°C. Very few people still use the wound balata ball and it is likely to be replaced altogether by the multi-layer ball. However some professionals still like the extraordinary feel and spin control required for finesse shots around the green. Our Recommendation. This ball is only really suitable for the best of the very best golfers.

The next grade is the grade-B used golf balls that are shiny white with a small mark or fading in the printing and minor scuffing from the first owner. The balls are near perfect for play and are best for the high handicap or beginning golfer or for a golf course that has lots of hazards. Next in line is the grade-C used golf ball that is great for practice or for that long shot over the water hazard. There may be moderate-sized play pen marks and small to moderate scuffs or scratches on them. However they are clean and playable with signs of usage. There are also golf ball companies that supply refinished golf balls that are processed by stripping stamping painting or clear-coating the golf ball.

To help you in your quest for the perfect golf ball well take you on a journey from the humble beginnings of the golf ball through to todays technologically advanced balls. The Early Days In general the larger the bag the heavier it will be - despite help from durable lightweight materials. Although the lightest designs now weigh in below 3lb special lumbar and/or hip padding is available for comfort and can make a real difference In the earliest days of golf some 500 years ago players used primitive equipment to play the game in a rather haphazard and casual manner.
